Planting trees and crops in the desert with persistent sweat and scientific technology
At present, the desert area in the world is about 31.4 million hectares, accounting for about 21% of the global land, and is continuously expanding at a rate of about 60000 square kilometers per year, seriously affecting the living environment of herdsmen and farmers. The vast expanse of desertified land has different causes of desertification. The soil conditions and climate conditions vary in different regions, which means that desert management plans also need to be tailored to local conditions. Therefore, controlling desertification is a very arduous task.
As is well known, the harsh desert environment, desertified soil, high temperature, drought, and water shortage make planting a completely impossible task. But for the sake of future generations and sustainable development, the villagers in the Mu Us Desert have risen to the challenge. Researchers study soil structure and guide villagers to use drainage and siltation techniques to increase soil nutrients and regulate soil fertility through river floods, greatly improving the environmental conditions of desert land. While maintaining soil moisture and nutrient conservation, the planting of windbreak forests is also continuously advancing. The local government has formulated a strategic plan to combine desertification control with regional economic development, planting economic crops such as corn, potatoes, sunflowers, seabuckthorn, and wolfberry on the well-managed sandy land, helping 100000 local herdsmen and farmers overcome poverty while controlling desertification.
In addition to the tree planting and drainage techniques of several generations of local residents, as well as the planting methods of windproof forest belts, innovative grid sand barrier technology, special plastic bag condensation technology, minimally invasive airflow tree planting and other technologies have provided tremendous technical support for sand fixation, water supply, and soil fertility enhancement, making outstanding contributions to the transformation of deserts into oases.
